SENATOR URGES GOVERNMENT TO EMBRACE FLEXIBLE WORK FOR YOUNG TALENTS

/ 30 June 2025

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian is urging the government to adopt stronger and more forward-thinking policies that support flexible work arrangements, especially for young professionals entering the workforce.

Gatchalian emphasized that both the public and private sectors must swiftly respond to the growing demand among younger workers for remote and flexible work setups.

He called on the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to implement robust policies that protect digital workers, including freelancers and gig economy workers, who are often excluded from traditional labor safeguards.

“The government and private sector must quickly adapt to the growing preference of young talents for flexible work,” Gatchalian said.

“DOLE should adopt stronger policies to support remote work and protect digital workers, including freelancers,” he added.

The senator also stressed the importance of investing in targeted skills development to prepare the Filipino workforce for roles in the digital economy.

“Targeted skills training must also be prioritized to equip our workforce for emerging digital roles,” he said.

Gatchalian warned that inaction could lead to a brain drain, with young professionals either leaving the country in search of better opportunities or turning to employers who are more aligned with modern work preferences.

“Delaying action risks losing our youth to opportunities abroad or to employers better aligned with their needs,” he said.

“Kailangan nating sumabay sa mabilis na pagbabago ng panahon upang matiyak ang mas mataas na productivity at maayos na kinabukasan para sa ating manggagawa,” he added.

Gatchalian’s call comes amid a global shift in workforce dynamics, with more companies offering hybrid or fully remote arrangements. He believes embracing this transformation is key to boosting productivity and ensuring a sustainable future for Filipino workers.
