DSWD ASSISTS YOUNG LEARNERS AFFECTED BY MT. KANLAON UNREST

/ 9 January 2025

THE DEPARTMENT of Social Welfare and Development has extended assistance to young learners affected by the ongoing unrest of Mt. Kanlaon.

In coordination with the La Castellana Elementary School faculty, the DSWD organized temporary learning sessions in evacuation centers.

DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao shared that personnel from DSWD Field Office 6-Western Visayas, together with faculty members, distributed learning modules to the affected students.

“We at the DSWD strive to address the needs of our disaster-affected kababayan beyond the standard provision of food and non-food items. This initiative reflects our commitment,” Dumlao said.

Since the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon last December 9, affected local government units have issued class suspensions and shifts in learning modes. Temporary learning sessions now serve as alternatives to regular school activities.

“Face-to-face classes are scheduled every Monday, while modular sessions are set from Tuesday to Friday,” Dumlao added.

She also highlighted the implementation of a school-based feeding program, which included distributing milk to support students’ health during these challenging times.

“These efforts not only bridge academic gaps but also support the emotional well-being of children amid the crisis,” Dumlao emphasized.
