K TO 12 ‘FAILURE’ NOT SURPRISING, SAYS TDC

/ 4 October 2023

THE “failure” of the K to 12 program did not come as a surprise, Teacher’s Dignity Coalition Chairman Benjo Basas said.

“Parang expected na po natin ‘yan kasi nakita naman natin even doon sa mga studies ng thinktank groups, kaya masasabing hindi naging maayos ‘yung K-12 program,” Basas said in a teleradyo interview.

“Even sa Department of Education at some point, may admission na [it is] a failure kasi nakita naman natin na ‘yung promises ng ating K-12 program ay hindi na-fulfill ng ating gobyerno,” he added.

He was reacting to the results of a survey released by the Social Weather Stations that about 50 percent of Filipinos were dissatisfied with the K to 12 program.

Basas claimed that the education did not improve and the K to 12 program only added another two years in basic education.

“Ang issue po dito ay dinagdagan mo lang ‘yung taon pero ‘di naman nadagdagan ‘yung karunungan ng mga bata so might as well ibalik na lang sa 10-year education cycle. Ganoon po ‘yung nagpe-prevail na sentiment ng marami sa ating mga kababayan,” the TDC official said.

He added that Grade 11 and 12 students need specialized equipment, materials, learning resources and trained teachers.
