SENATOR TO REVIEW UE STUDENTS’ COMPLAINT ON SUSPENSION OF SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS

/ 31 March 2021

SENATOR Joel Villanueva pledged to look into the complaints of students of the University of the East over the “unjust disqualification” of scholarship grants.

The chairman of the Senate Committee on Higher, Technical and Vocational Education, said that a team will review the issue.

Justine Calatong, UE-University Student Council president, said the senator’s office responded to her letter on Tuesday, March 30.

“This has been endorsed to our legislative team for review and appropriate action,” Villanueva said in an email to Calatong.

The USC reported that more than 1,000 students were not granted scholarship grants for the second semester of Academic Year 2020-2021.

The student body earlier said that students cannot afford to pay the full fees and that they “fell on a debt trap through the promise of scholarship.”

Calatong said that students have asked school officials for a dialogue but got no response.

“The revocation of scholarship, without proper notice and just explanation, seems to be a recurring problem in the university where policies are always unfavorable to the welfare of the students,” she said.

“Many students considered the scholarship program of the university as their only hope to continue their education in the institution,” she added.
