MAPUA EMERGED VICTORIOUS OVER PERPETUAL
Mapua University won the battle against the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) despite a close fight in all five sets, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 13-25, 15-12, Friday to earn its third win in the NCAA Season 97 women's volleyball competition at the Paco Arena in Manila.
With a total of 21 points, Alyanna Nicole Ong was the driving force behind the team’s victory. The team’s rookie middle blocker was instrumental in their progress as the Lady Cardinals improved to 3-1. Jonina Fernandez’s contribution of 12 points also helped Mapua reach its goal.
In the first set, Perpetual took a commanding 5-0 lead and won, 25-20. Tere Manalo’s ace in the second set gave Mapua a 19-15 lead, which they later increased to 23-18 thanks to Perpetual’s blunders. This time, Manalo came through, winning 25-22.
Perpetual led 19-17 in the third set but Ong and Chenie Batac helped reverse the tide for Mapua with a 7-1 run. The Lady Cardinals grabbed the set point, 24-20, and then Fernandez snatched the last score to give Mapua the win at 25-23.
Perpetual, on the other hand, rallied to take the fourth set by a score of 25-13.
They were leading 10-6 before the Lady Altas seized four straight points to even the match at 10-all. Mapua took a 12-10 lead due to Perpetual errors, but Carla Gaudan and Ong cut the margin to 14-11 before Manalo’s tremendous hit sealed the victory, 15-12.
The Lady Altas were unable to stay at the forefront which they gained from winning the first set, and Mapua was able to make a counter-rally that was highlighted by Ong to give Perpetual its second loss in four of its matches.
