ILOCOS NORTE SCHOOLS EMBRACE GREEN REVOLUTION

/ 1 November 2023

SEVERAL schools in Ilocos Norte have embraced the so-called green revolution in support of the government’s food security program by teaching children to grow and eat their produce.

At the Eulalio Siazon Memorial Elementary School in Barangay 33-B La Paz in Laoag City, urban agriculture is being practiced by teachers and learners who grow fruits and vegetables on idle lots.

The school, a recipient of a P100,000-grant from the Agriculture Training Institute, is among the model schools in Ilocos Norte to showcase innovative agricultural technologies such as multiple cropping, container gardening, edible landscaping, hydroponics, vertical gardening and aquaponics.

The school-community gardens were given seeds of pechay, okra and pole sitao, as well as seedlings of squash, bitter gourd, eggplant, tomato, and finger pepper.

Learners get hands-on experience on how to plant and grow them.

Laoag City Schools Division Office information officer Cherry Joy Dizcaya said that by engaging in bio-intensive gardening, the youth are also exposed to the potentials and promises of agriculture.
