DOJ, IBP TO USE CHATBOT DEVELOPED BY XAVIER UNIVERSITY

/ 6 July 2021

AN ARTIFICIAL Intelligence chatbot developed by a former student of Xavier University will be used by the Department of Justice’s Action Center in Region 10 and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines in Misamis Oriental to help give free legal assistance.

The university said the AI chatbot named “Bots Legis” was developed by Atty. Albert Daba III in 2017 while he was studying law at the university.

It is designed to give automated responses to common legal topics like money claims, retrenchment, consumer complaints, birth certificate correction and libel.

People can use the chatbot to get instant responses to discuss legal concerns or to confer with a lawyer through Facebook messenger.

It was programmed with contents made in consultations with lawyers, judges, and clerks of court, XU said on its website.

“Bots Legis has no feature at the moment about domestic abuses and on more complicated questions on labor law, so those and other topics outside the Bots Legis features will be referred to our partners,” Daba said as posted on the university’s website.

“The advice will still be given on the chatbox, but sometimes, the lawyers will also call and advise the user on the merits of the case and discuss their legal options,” he added.
