THE Alliance of Concerned Teachers National Capital Region Union President Ruby Bernardo said that reverting to the old school calendar will address the ongoing heat-related issues in schools that adversely affect students and teachers.

“‘Yung isa talaga sa gusto natin ay talagang ma-revert na ang ating school calendar kasi talagang hindi uubra na mayroon tayong pasok pagdating ng Marso hanggang Mayo,” Bernardo said when asked about the solutions to address the said concerns.

“Ito ‘yung mga maiinit na mga buwan ng ating taon kaya talagang importanteng tingnan talaga ng Department of Education ‘yung urgency ng pagpapalit ng ating school calendar,” she added.

In its survey which was conducted to assess the impact of the rising heat index in the region on both teachers and students, it showed that 77 percent experience difficulties coping with the stifling heat within classrooms.

Meanwhile, the group urged the government to build adequate classrooms, hire more teachers and education support personnel, and establish a climate crisis-resilient environment to improve learning conditions.

“This requires adequate budget allocated to education which we have long demanded from the government,” Bernardo said.

Some cities and schools have suspended classes on April 1 due to extreme heat.
