LEYTE NORMAL NAT’L HIGH COMMENDED FOR ALLOWING TRANS STUDENT DRESS TO SOGIE
THE LEYTE National High School gained praise from the LGBTQIA+ community and supporters after allowing a transwoman to dress according to her Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression.
This came about after a student posted on Facebook how the school allowed her to dress as a woman and wear the clothing that identities with her gender.
“As a transwoman, I will be eternally grateful to (LNHS) for allowing me to wear a uniform that I am more comfortable with,” the student wrote on her Facebook page.
Transrights advocate and Miss Trans Global Miss Mela Habijan also welcomed the development, noting other schools should follow suit.
Habijan also said as stated by the Department of Education policy, students are allowed to wear what they want and protect them from discrimination under the Gender Responsive Basic Education Policy.
“Bagama‘t marami pang paaralan ang hindi nakikiisa at sumusinod, unti-unti nang naipatutupad ang DepEd Order. We will get there,” Habijan said.
