DAVAO ORIENTAL STATE U TO SANCTION STUDENTS BEHIND ONLINE PRANK ON PROFESSOR

/ 3 November 2021

THE DAVAO Oriental State University will either suspend or expel the students who conducted a “publicly humiliating” prank on their professor.

The DOrSU Office of the Faculty Union Legislative Board said that the students made a mockery of the teacher who was having a poor internet signal during one of her class.

The prank drew mixed reactions from the public.

The union said that the prank violated the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 and the Data Privacy Act of 2012.

“…the gravity of the offense/s committed […] suspension of no less than one semester of the students found guilty […] and expulsion in the severest case for the one who actively participated in the action and the other student who uploaded it in her social media account under the agreement of punishment as meted by the Faculty Union and the Administration,” the union said in a resolution.

“…such recommendations to render punishments or sanctions to whomsoever deserving would serve justice to the faculty being offended and such would serve as warning to those to intend to commit similar acts in the future,” it added.

DOrSU President Dr. Roy Ponce said that the student handbook should be updated to cover cyber libel to avoid similar incidents.
