ADAMSON LAW SCHOOL SUPPORTS EJK TRUTH COMMISSION, CALLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY

/ 31 May 2026

The Adamson University College of Law has expressed support for the creation of an Extrajudicial Killings (EJK) Truth Commission, emphasizing the need to establish a credible and comprehensive record of alleged extrajudicial killings and other human rights violations in the country.

In a statement, Dean Atty. Anna Maria D. Abad said the law school welcomes the formation of the independent commission and supports its efforts to document cases linked to alleged extrajudicial killings and related human rights abuses.

The law school noted that nearly a decade after the anti-illegal drug campaign launched during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte, many victims and their families continue to seek justice. It added that the experiences and testimonies of those affected by the campaign have often been “discredited or doubted,” a situation it attributed to political idolatry.

Citing the Supreme Court ruling in People v. Narvas (G.R. No. 241254, July 8, 2019), the College of Law underscored the importance of upholding human rights in the fight against illegal drugs. The statement quoted the Court’s pronouncement that “a battle waged against illegal drugs that tramples on the rights of the people is not a war on drugs. It is a war against the people.”

As a Vincentian institution, the Adamson University College of Law said it believes that truth must be documented and preserved to help prevent similar abuses from occurring in the future. The law school expressed hope that the commission’s work would advance accountability, deliver justice to victims, and strengthen respect for the rule of law.

“In doing so, we likewise commit ourselves to greater vigilance in upholding truth, justice, and the rule of law in the communities we serve and in the legal profession to which we have dedicated ourselves, in faithful pursuit of our Vincentian mission to serve and stand with the poor and the marginalized,” the statement said.
