PSL PLANS TO STAGE FOUR CONFERENCES IN 2021 COMEBACK

Philippine Super Liga (PSL) chairman Philip Ella Juico laid the league’s plans for 2021 comeback with its three indoor volleyball conferences and the Grand Prix likely to become its season-ender for the first time since 2017.

“The PSL board is meeting right now and without trying to pre-empt everyone, the plan is to have three regular conferences in addition to the beach volleyball,” said Juico.

Before taking into action, all the plans bared by the chairman are still under the approval of the IATF both at the national and regional levels. “And of course, [the] premise on the cooperation of the local government units concerned where we will have our competitions and practices,” he added.

The supposed PSL Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup opener game in November has to be shelved due to several weather disturbances in the country and will schedule the kick-off the season restart in February 2021.

The league is also eyeing to stage its first conference of indoor volleyball around March, followed by the second conference in June or July and their season-ending tournament is tentatively set for October.

Juico said that the import-flavored Grand Prix, which has been their season opener since 2018, is likely to stage as their last conference after the All-Filipino and Invitational to give more time for the overseas players to recover from this pandemic.

Kasi hindi natin alam ang sitwasyon ng mga nasa ibang bansa e. Yung mga overseas players iba iba ang sitwasyon nila,” said Juico. “So dinudulo natin yan, hoping at that time mas stabilize na ang situation.”

Just like the ongoing professional athletic tournaments, the PSL is seeing options like a bubble concept or closed-door games for their 2021 tournaments but it still depends on the country’s progress in this health crisis.

With the league’s restart, the mass production of vaccines for COVID-19 will be crucial for the league as some of their teams are leaning towards it.

“Well, iyang presence ng vaccine na yan is going to be very crucial. Because a number of our teams are also saying without the vaccine, it will be very difficult to let their athletes play,” Juico said.

Unang una yung mga magulang at saka yung mga mahal sa buhay nung mga manlalaro yun din ang hinahanap.”

The league is now waiting to receive the go-signal from the government to allow their teams to return to practice before the year ends.

“We are going to apply for the permit sa IATF within the next few weeks for indoor volleyball. So there is a chance (this year),” Juico said. “But again, we have to meet with the teams and present this to the IATF regional office where the (practices and) games will be held.”
