SENATOR SEEKS TO BRING SCHOOLS CLOSER TO STUDENTS IN REMOTE COMMUNITIES

/ 23 April 2026

SENATOR Bam Aquino is proposing a measure to bring schools closer to learners in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA), aiming to improve access to education in remote communities.

Aquino highlighted the daily struggles of students who endure long and often hazardous journeys just to attend classes, saying these challenges take a toll on both their time and ability to learn.

“We aim to ensure that learners in GIDA communities have access to quality education—either by bringing schools closer to them or by providing safe transportation where distance remains a barrier,” Aquino said.

He noted that many students spend hours crossing mountains, rivers, and difficult terrain, time that would be better spent in the classroom.

“Studying is already challenging, but it becomes even harder when students must first navigate dangerous paths before they can even begin to learn,” he added.

Under the proposal, the government would work to establish schools within a three-kilometer radius of communities. For students living beyond that distance, the plan includes providing safe and reliable transportation options.

Aquino also stressed the need to support teachers assigned to remote areas, pushing for additional allowances and housing benefits to encourage them to continue serving in far-flung communities.

“Providing adequate support to our teachers is essential so they can continue their vital work in these areas,” he said.

Aquino underscored the broader goal of the initiative, saying, “By bringing schools closer to our children, we bring them closer to achieving their dreams.
