SENATOR TO GRADUATES: CRISES SHAPE YOU INTO FUTURE LEADERS

/ 5 April 2026

SENATE Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano has urged young Filipinos to view the crises they have experienced as preparation for future leadership, as schools across the country hold their end-of-year rites.

Speaking before hundreds of graduating and moving-up students and their parents in Taguig City, Cayetano said hardships play a crucial role in shaping stronger and more compassionate leaders.

He stressed that true leadership is not about being served, but about serving others and addressing gaps in society.

“In Filipino, the word ‘pamumuno’ is beautiful—it means to fill what is lacking. That is the role of a leader,” he said.

Cayetano linked his message to this year’s graduation theme, “Pilipinong Nagtatapos, Handang Mamuno nang may Kakayanan at Mabuting Pagkatao,” noting that today’s youth have endured major challenges—from the COVID-19 pandemic to governance controversies and the ongoing oil crisis.

“These experiences are preparing you to become a more grounded and committed generation of leaders,” he told the students.

The senator added that not all struggles are immediately understood, but are part of a broader process of growth.

“You are being trained—not just by your parents or your teachers, but by the world itself,” he said.

Citing the Book of Genesis, Cayetano described leadership as a shared responsibility and a form of stewardship over what has been entrusted to each individual.

He also encouraged resilience, reminding students that their actions influence others.

“If you are a leader, others will follow. So when you feel like quitting or giving up, remember that your decisions affect those around you,” he said.

Cayetano reassured students that they are valued and supported, urging them to remain hopeful in difficult times.

“God loves you. Whenever you have doubts, remind yourself that you are being trained and that many people care about you,” he added.

The senator also called on students to honor their parents’ sacrifices, saying that finishing their education is one of the greatest ways to show gratitude.

“Today, the best ‘thank you’ you can give your parents is to graduate,” he said.
