SENATOR PUSHES PROBE ON ONLINE GAMES’ IMPACT ON YOUTH AFTER LAGUNA SHOOTING PLOT
SENATOR Risa Hontiveros is calling for an investigation into the potential impact of online gaming platforms on youth behavior following a foiled mass shooting attempt in Laguna.
Hontiveros filed Senate Resolution No. 357, urging the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality to examine widely used gaming platforms that may expose minors to violent content.
Among those cited in the resolution are popular titles such as Roblox, Minecraft, Fortnite, Call of Duty, and Free Fire, along with other multiplayer games that feature violent themes.
The senator raised concerns over the lack of strict age and identity verification systems on these platforms, warning that minors may not be sufficiently protected from harmful content and online predators.
She also noted that in-game chat features could be exploited by adults to communicate with children, potentially leading to grooming, abuse, and even the encouragement of violent behavior.
Hontiveros emphasized the need for Congress to strengthen laws and regulatory frameworks in step with rapid technological advancements, including promoting digital literacy and responsible gaming among the youth.
The proposed inquiry will also examine the possible effects of prolonged exposure to online games on the mental health of young users.
