UAAP LAUNCHES ‘GREEN CARD’ SYSTEM TO REWARD HONESTY AND SPORTSMANSHIP
THE UNIVERSITY Athletics Association of the Philippines is rolling out an innovative system to recognize fair play in the upcoming Season 88 collegiate volleyball tournament, set to begin on February 14 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Dubbed the “green card” initiative, the program aims to highlight honesty and sportsmanship among student-athletes across both men’s and women’s competitions. Players who voluntarily acknowledge a block touch or a net contact will be awarded a green card. This approach is designed to streamline game officiating and minimize unnecessary video challenges.
At the conclusion of the season, the team with the most green cards will be honored with the Sportsmanship Award, complementing the usual individual recognitions.
“The main highlight for Season 88 is the green card system, which rewards our athletes for their integrity and sportsmanship,” UAAP Commissioner Michael Verano said during a press briefing at the MOA Arena on Wednesday. “This will also serve as a key criterion for awarding the Sportsmanship trophy at the end of the season.”
On the court, De La Salle University and Far Eastern University will open the action on Valentine’s Day, while defending champion National University will face the University of Santo Tomas in a rematch of the Season 86 Finals on February 15.
Despite missing stars Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon, the Lady Bulldogs remain a team to watch, featuring setter Lams Lamina, outside spiker Vange Alinsug, and standout rookie Sam Cantada under new head coach Regine Diego.
“I feel at home at NU, having been part of the program before. I’m excited to be back on the court and help defend our championship,” said Diego, who previously coached the university’s girls’ volleyball team.
The Bulldogs, aiming for a sixth consecutive title, also boast national team players including middle blocker Peng Taguibolos, opposite spiker Leo Ordiales, Buds Buddin, and Jade Disquitado, all of whom competed in the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship.
“For us, every season comes with pressure. What matters most is how we address challenges both in games and during training, and always maintain the mindset of giving our best whenever we step on the court,” Bulldogs head coach Dante Alinsunurin said.
