DLSU-D, ECOWASTE COALITION REPORT REVEALS 42% DECREASE IN MARINE LITTER IN MANILA BAY
DE LA SALLE University-Dasmariñas and the EcoWaste Coalition recently presented the findings of the 2024 Marine Litter Monitoring Survey at a conference in Quezon City.
The report, presented by DLSU-D researchers Dr. Johnny Ching and Dr. Michael Guyamin, highlighted a 42% reduction in marine litter across 10 project sites in Cavite, Bataan, and Metro Manila between 2023 and 2024.
Despite this progress, plastics remain the primary marine pollutant, accounting for 91% of the collected waste. The survey also noted a seasonal trend, with a 16% increase in waste collection during the wet months compared to the dry season.
The report calls for stronger enforcement of environmental laws, such as RA 9003 (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act) and RA 9275 (Clean Water Act), along with expanded awareness campaigns and standardized cleanup methods.
A comprehensive marine litter management plan involving government and community efforts is also recommended to ensure the long-term restoration of Manila Bay.
This report is part of the Enhancing Marine Litter Management program, a collaborative initiative funded by KOICA and the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation through Our Sea of East Asia Network.
