SENATOR Christopher ‘Bong’ Go emphasized the need to recognize the silent battles students face as he pushed for the establishment of Mental Health Offices in public higher education institutions.

Go’s proposed measure, Senate Bill 2598, seeks to provide comfort, understanding, and tangible help to struggling students by creating Mental Health Offices in higher education institutions (HEIs) staffed with trained counselors for immediate support.

The bill also proposes hotlines for students in distress, offering a lifeline in moments of anxiety or despair.

“Pakiramdam mo, nag-iisa ka at hindi ka nila pinakikinggan,” Go said, acknowledging the isolation many young people feel.

Mental health has long been a taboo subject in the Philippines, often ignored or stigmatized. Go’s bill aims to break these barriers and provide a judgment-free space for students to seek help.

At the heart of the measure is a proactive approach to suicide prevention, prioritizing early detection and intervention.

“Hindi ko ililitanya kung ano ang tama o mali. Ang gusto ko lang sabihin, tahan na. Nandito lang si Kuya,” Go said, sending a simple message: It’s okay to stop fighting alone—help is available.

The bill envisions mental health offices in every public university and college, providing comfort, guidance, and support for students.
