SAN BEDA FENDS OFF PERPETUAL FOR WIN NO. 6, SECURES PLAY-IN SPOT
San Beda University denied the late charge of the University of Perpetual Help, 78-71, to clinch a play-in spot in the NCAA Season 97 seniors basketball tournament, Wednesday at La Salle Green Hills’ St. Benilde Gym in Mandaluyong City.
James Kwekuteye showed the way for the Red Lions, scoring 18 points along with two crucial steals while Yukien Andrada finished with 15 points on a 5-for-8 (62.5-percent) shooting to lead the Red Lions to its sixth straight victory.
The Red Lions went on a scoring spree in the second frame, erupting for 32 points to stretch a double-digit spread to end with a 14-point lead, 48-34.
The Altas, however, tried to make a comeback in the final frame after mounting an 8-0 run, trimming down the lead to just 7, 67-74, that forced Fernandez to call for a time out with 1:24 remaining in the clock.
San Beda, then, held on with some crucial plays, including a big shot from Peter Alfaro late, as it clinched the win.
Alfaro added nine markers, six rebounds, and an assist while Rhayyan Amsali got nine points as well with five rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Meanwhile, Kim Aurin paced Perpetual with 16 points and three boards, while Jielo Razon drained three treys for his 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals in the loss that succumbed them to a 2-5 record.
