FRAN YU COMES BIG WITH A CLUTCH JUMPER TO GIVE LETRAN THE WIN OVER LYCEUM
Fran Yu clutched a jumper to give Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) the victory over Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU), 80-77, in the NCAA Season 97 seniors basketball tournament.
Yu made the dagger for 80-77 with 22 seconds left in the shot clock and stole the ball from the Pirates to seal the undefeated scheme.
But the Letran Knights did not fare well in the early game despite Rhenz Abando bolstering 14 points for Letran to end the first frame with a four points advantage.
Even the second and third quarters did not favor the defending champions with Omar Larupay and John Barba leading the way for Lyceum with their twin digits score, 19 and 10, respectively.
But Abando broke the way in to give the lead on the Knights after forcing a lay-up and maintained balance despite numerous contacts at the 7:48 mark, 66-65, followed by a foul and an assist from Yu that extended the lead to 69-65.
Both teams went for a score-for-score but the Pirates were not able to steal away the lead despite Navarro’s crucial two points 77-78 with 37.5 seconds left in the last frame.
Letran is now sitting on a 5-0 card the same as its rival school, San Beda University.
“Talagang nakatakas lang. In the second half, we went to our system. It paid off in the first three minutes of the third quarter,” said Knights coach Bonnie Tan.
