UAAP AIMS TO HOLD ONLY TWO BUBBLE EVENTS FOR SEASON 83

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) is targeting to return in action with only two events for Season 83 in April 2021.

Troubled in staging a full program due to the safety and absence of a vaccine, UAAP is considering holding only two separate bubbles to its centerpiece events—men’s basketball and women’s volleyball. 

“If there is no vaccine yet by first quarter of 2021 and still no face-to-face classes, the only option is to hold tournaments in a bubble,” UAAP board member Mark Molina of Far Eastern University said. 

The UAAP’s board of trustees is planning to hold an emergency meeting this week for the plans of the upcoming Season 83, University of the Philippines Board of UAAP Dean Francisco “Kiko” Diaz confirmed.  

“We are just waiting for the board of trustees meeting this week. So far, we’re not allowed to speak,” Diaz shared in an interview with BusinessMirror. 

According to Diaz, every option is presented to the board and is only waiting for them to decide. The announcement will be made by UAAP Season 83 President Emannuel Calanog.

“We’re all about equality in sports, kaya lang siyempre with our partners, we also have to consider iyong commercial side. Unfortunately, when you talk about that, talagang iyong flagship events ang napag-uusapan. Iyan ang mga tinitimbang namin,” Executive Director Rebo Saguisag said during his Power & Play guesting.

When everything will fall into place and the league is given the green light to train, varsity players will be starting their training after Christmas break. 

With De La Salle University as the host of the UAAP Season 83 and 84, the league will broadcast with Cignal/TV5.
