THOMAS DOOLEY RETURNS AS COACH OF PHILIPPINE AZKALS
The Philippine Azkals will be led by former United States national team player Thomas Dooley once more in preparation for the third round of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.
Dooley shared the said development through a Facebook post as he recounted the four years he spent with the Philippine Azkals.
“Yes, I’m back and can’t wait to get started. We will change the direction we have been going for the last 4 years,” Dooley wrote in a Facebook post.
The former United States national team player, Dooley, led the Philippine men’s football team from 2014 to 2018, to which Scott Cooper took over in the following years, and resigned from being the coach for the Cup qualifiers.
“I am honored to coach our beloved team again. Players will be honored to wear this jersey with pride. Not just talking about it, showing it on the field. We will take the success back to where we left off together four years ago.”
“I know it’s easier said than done. It will be difficult, but we will make it. We will fight, we will play football and we will win again. So let’s start together to help the Philippines men’s national team succeed” he added.
Dooley guided the PH team as close as to being qualified in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, and last called the shots for the Philippine Azkals when they beat Tajikistan, 2-1, to qualify for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.
The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) welcomed Dooley back, and the squad will strive to push through again when they engage in the forthcoming AFC Asian Cup qualification tournament in Mongolia from June 8 to 14.
The Azkals will conduct their training in the country from May 26 to June 3 before heading to the Asian Cup qualifiers, where they will be joined by host Mongolia, Palestine, and Yemen.
