Petecio dominated Arias Castaneda of Colombia, 5-0, via a unanimous decision in the women’s boxing featherweight quarterfinals on Wednesday.

With her victory, the 29-year-old boxer achieved yet another Olympic first by becoming the first female boxer in the Philippines to win an Olympic medal.

It will also be the first time for the country to bag multiple medals at the Summer Games since 1932.

Furthermore, Petecio ended the 25-year Olympic medal drought for boxing following Onyok Velasco’s silver medal finish during the 1996 Atlanta Games.

As she carved her own Olympic milestone, Petecio shared that her inspiration was drawn from Diaz. 

“Sobrang na-inspire po ako kay Hidilyn. Hinintay ko po talaga na matapos ‘yung laban n’ya,” she said. 

“Sobrang saya po namin, sobrang proud kami kay Hidilyn. Jump high po!”

Petecio is two wins shy from the gold medal and will be facing Italy’s Irma Testa in the semifinals on Saturday.
