SENATE PANEL ISSUES SHOW CAUSE ORDER VS PATAFA BOARD

Senate Committee on Sports chairman Christopher 'Bong' Go has issued a show cause order to the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) board of directors enjoining them to explain why they should not be cited for contempt.

This was after four senators filed a motion to hold the PATAFA board in contempt for not complying with the committee’s order in relation to the hearing conducted by the Committee on Sports joint with the Committee on Finance last February 7, 2022.

Notably, the show cause order requires the PATAFA to explain why its board should not be cited in contempt under Section 18 of the Senate Rules of Procedure Governing Inquiries In Aid of Legislation, for filing an arbitration case despite a prior commitment to undergo mediation proceedings with EJ Obiena.

Go, earlier stressed that the Senate committee is committed to help resolve the issue in order to protect the welfare of Filipino athletes in a fair and lawful manner.

The senator previously reiterated his disappointment amid the conflict between PATAFA and Obiena which hindered the latter from competing in several international competitions.

Ang akin lang po dito kung maaari hayaan na sa pulitiko ang pulitika. Huwag nyo na pong ihalo sa sports. Kawawa po ang atleta. Nakikiusap po kami sa inyo, magkaisa na po kayo.  Tapusin nyo na ang problema diyan,” he earlier remarked.
