PONTEJOS LEADS ARMY TO FIRST-EVER WNBL CHAMPIONSHIP

Janine Pontejos powered Philippine Army to a Spectacular finish, scoring 33 points as the team defeated PSI Lady Air Defenders, 70-57, to win the 2022 WNBL First Conference championship in San Fernando, Pampanga.

The Gilas Pilipinas produced significant plays in the fourth quarter as the Lady Battalion overcame a 13-point deficit to win the best-of-three series at Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in Quezon City.

Pontejos was ultimately selected as the Most Valuable Player of the Finals after averaging 30.5 points, shooting 44 percent from the field, 7.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 3.5 steals throughout the course of a match.

Chack Cabinbin, a member of the national team who also plays for the Lady Battalion, contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, nine assists, and two steals to the squad’s total score.

The Lady Battalion defeated the top-seeded Taguig Lady Generals team 2-1 in the semifinals, despite the fact that they had won only three of their eight games during the eliminations.

They were able to get off to a strong start in the championship series by claiming a 78-70 victory over the Lady Air Defenders on the previous Friday.

Before the match, Cindy Resultay had been named the conference’s Most Valuable Player, with 20 points, while Amby Almazan scored 16 points and a record-setting 23 rebounds.
