PH BEACH VOLLEY ENDS OLYMPIC BID AT AVC CONTINENTAL CUP
The Philippines beach volleyball crashes out of their Olympic dreams after both men's and women's teams bowed out in the AVC Continental Cup last Friday in Nakhon Pathom held in Thailand.
Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons were trounced by Alice Zeimann and Shaunna Marie Polley of New Zealand 2, 21-19, 10-21, 15-12, in the Golden Match of the women’s semifinals.
The ‘SiPons’ tandem got the better off in the first salvo, however, this was immediately taken over by Zeimann and Polley, securing the second and third set to advance to the final round of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Earlier, the Philippine duo bested Francesca Kirwan and Olivia MacDonald, 21-12, 17-21, 15-9.
With the win, New Zealand will face Olympic host Japan on Saturday in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Dij Rodriguez and Baby Love Barbon of Philippines 2 fell to Zeimann and Polley of New Zealand 2, 14-21, 13-21.
On the men’s side, both Philippine teams stood no chance against Australia.
Jaron Requinton and James Buytrago were defeated by Christopher McHugh and Damien Schumann of Australia 1, 11-21, 15-21.
Anthony Arbasto and Jude Garcia of Philippines 2 lost to Maximilian Guehrer and Zachery Schubert of Australia 2 due to knee injury.
Australia and Japan will battle it all out for the men’s final ticket on Saturday where the winner will join China, Indonesia, Iran, New Zealand, Oman, Qatar and Thailand.
