PETROGAZZ SWEEPS CIGNAL, FACES CREAMLINE IN PVL FINALS
Petro Gazz overpowered Cignal, 25-21, 28-26, 15-25, 25-21, in a do-or-die Game 3 on Monday night to clinch the remaining championship berth in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference.
Myla Pablo and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas showed the way for the Angels with 17 points apiece to complete a comeback against the HD Spikers, who had an unbeaten run en route to the semifinals.
However, it was the veteran setter Chie Saet that steered the Angels with her 36 excellent sets on top of four points, including crucial plays in the crunch, that earned her the Best Player of the Game.
“Pinaghirapan namin to kahit maiksi lang ang preparation namin. Pero matured na yung team, hindi na ganung kahirap mag-adjust,” a teary-eyed Saet said during postgame interview.
Cignal quickly controlled the first set but Petro Gazz refused to give up the fight and found their rhythm in the third-set tempo and exerted all efforts in the fourth set.
A back-row spike from Gretchel Soltones and a service ace from Pablo sealed the win for Petro Gazz as they face title-favorite Creamline in the best-of-three finals starting on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Remy Palma finished with 14 points while Gretchel Soltones added 12 in an epic comeback win.
Meanwhile, Ces Molina paced Cignal with 23 points, which lost team captain Rachel Anne Daquis late in the second set due to cramps and never came back.
In addition, Cignal will head up against Choco Mucho in the bronze medal game.
