Vice President Leni Robredo said it was a big triumph in the country.

“Big win for the Philippines!! Thank you for making us proud, Hidilyn,” she said in a Facebook post.

Senators meanwhile said that it was “remarkable achievement” as the country won its first Olympic gold medal.

Literal na binuhat ni Hidilyn Diaz ang sambayanang Pilipino ngayong gabi…Sa isang iglap, napawi ang matagal na uhaw ng ating bayan sa mailap na Olympic Gold Medal,” Sen. Joel Villanueva said.

“First time our national anthem is heard in the Olympics! Congratulations to all. Thank you [Hidilyn]!!!,” Sotto said in a tweet.

Sen. Panfilo Lacson likewise congratulated Diaz, saying that she brought “national honor, national pride, and good news to the Philippines at a time we Filipinos need them most.”

“And more than lifting the nation on her shoulders and beating a field that included China’s pride, Hidilyn has become a unifying and rallying point for us Filipinos, to carry the weight of the humongous problems we face,” Lacson said.

After weighing 97 kilos in the snatch and 127 kilograms in the clean and jerk, Diaz beat out other rivals in the 55kg division, including China’s Liao Qiuyun. This follows Diaz’s silver medal performance in the 53kg category in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
