Carlo Paalam is one win away from an assured medal after punching his ticket to the quarterfinals as he dominated Algeria's Mohamed Flissi in the Round of 16 at the Kokugikan Arena on Saturday.

Paalam outlasted his veteran opponent with a 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27 win to advance to the next round.

“Sobrang saya po, hindi lang para sa akin kundi sa buong Pilipinas,” Paalam said.

The next fight for the 23-year old will not be an easy one as he will be against Rio Olympics gold medalist Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan.

Paalam will face Zoirov in the quarterfinals on Tuesday for an assured place on the podium.

He is the second boxer in the Philippines to reach the quarterfinals round after Nesthy Petecio who will be vying for the gold medal in her final match against Japan’s Sena Irie.
