Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala is starting the new year at world No.8 in the International Tennis Federation rankings following an outstanding 2021 campaign.

/ 9 January 2022

Eala rose two notches from tenth place in the first International Tennis Federation (ITF) world junior ranking this year.

The 16-year-old netter catapulted to a peak standing of No.2 in July 2021 following a stellar win in the French Open junior doubles with Russian partner Oksana Selekhmeteva over Maria Bondarenko of Russia and Amarissa Kiara Tóth of Hungary, 6-0, 7-5.

Eala also bagged a twin-title in the prestigious JA Milan against Nikola Bartunkova, 6-3, 6-3, in July.

The 5-foot-9 ace will start the new year with 1,481 points to her name made by two late tourneys last month in her return from a long hiatus due to a foot injury which almost drew her outside the top 10 after being idle inside the top three for months.

Croatia’s Petra Marcinko is at the top of the ITF girls’ rankings with 2,367.25 points while Linda Fruhvirtova was at second with 2,305.25 points with Diana Shnaider of Russia taking third at 2,274.25 points.

Completing the list are Russia’s Brenda Fruhvirtova (4th) and former No. 1 Andorra’s Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva (5th), Russia’s Ksenia Zaytseva (6th), USA’s Robin Montgomery (7th), Argentina’ Solana Sierra (9th), and American Clervie Ngounoue (10th).

In the first Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), Eala is at No. 526 after claiming her maiden crown in the women’s pro circuit last year that putting her at a career-high 505th ranking after starting from outside the top 1500.
