ALEX EALA BOWS OUT OF THE J1 ROEHAMPTON TOURNAMENT AFTER QUARTERFINALS UPSET
Filipina netter Alex Eala ends her stint in the J1 Roehampton girls singles tournament in the Bank of England Sports Club, Roehampton, on Friday after losing to Czech Republic’s Linda Fruhvirtova, 4-6, 1-6.
After getting the beat on her first grass-court stint, Filipina tennis sensation who dominated the first three rounds of the competition crashed out of the J1 Roehampton tournament in the quarterfinals.
The International Tennis Federation Grade 1 tournament serves as her preparations for the Wimbledon juniors event which is scheduled on Monday, July 5.
The 16-year-old Eala defeated Czech Republic’s Darja Vidmanova, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round.
Then, she defeated Italy’s Matilde Paoletti, 6-2, 6-0, Friday morning before an impressive win over Germany’s Mara Guth, 6-4, 6-2, in the third round.
Eala, who holds 3-0 head-to-head advantage and Junior World No. 3 fell short over the 16-year-old Fruhvirtova, who is currently seeded at no. 14 in the Junior World ranking.
In the girl’s doubles event, Eala and Indonesian partner Priska Nugroho, which was bolstered by their 2020 Australian Open juniors doubles triumph, fell short against Czech Barbora Palicova and Slovakian Radka Zelnickova, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round.
The 16-year-old Filipina ace is hopeful to bag her third Grand Slam title in the Wimbledon debut in the juniors tournament that will be staged from July 5 to 11 in London.
