CEBU CITY SET TO DISTRIBUTE CASH ALLOWANCE TO 9,700 SCHOLARS
THE DISTRIBUTION of allowances for college scholars in Cebu City will resume starting October 5 after it was halted due to Covid19 pandemic, the city’s spokesperson said.
Cebu City spokesperson Rey Gealon said over 9,700 students will receive the cash assistance as they continue their studies online.
They will provide P2,500 allowance for scholars studying in private universities while P2,000 will be provided for those studying in state universities.
The spokesperson, however, reiterated that they are still identifying the manner of the distribution for the allowances since most of the students are below 21 years old and the stay-at-home mandate is still being implemented under the modified general community quarantine.
Still, he assured the scholars would already receive their allowances by next month upon the release of guidelines through an executive order by the Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella.
Last February, Mayor Labella led the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement with the partner schools of the city where the local government would provide educational subsidies to the students in the senior high school and college levels.
“It is one of our important duties to provide education to our citizens in Cebu City. Many of our underprivileged citizens could no longer go to college. So, I hope our partner schools will take off our deserving scholars because the money of the city, the taxpayer’s money, is going to them,” he said.
There are 19 colleges and universities in the city that are partners in this scholarship program including the University of Cebu, University of Visayas, Cebu Technological University, Cebu Normal University and the Asian College of Technology, among others.
