BAYAN SOUNDS ALARM ON MORE MILITARY INTRUSIONS
BAGONG Alyansang Makabayan Secretary General Renato Reyes on Tuesday warned that the police operation conducted inside the University of San Carlos in Cebu City could be a precedent to more campus intrusion.
Reyes said that a similar scenario might transpire in the University of the Philippines now that the Defense department scrapped its agreement with UP that prevented security troops from entering campuses without prior notice.
“This is the scenario that the UP-DND accord seeks to prevent. Now for the first time in 30 years, there is no accord in place as far as the regime is concerned, we find ourselves in unchartered waters. What happens next?” he added.
The Philippine National Police said it rescued Lumad students in its operation in Cebu, claiming that the children were being trained to become communist insurgents.
UP was one of the schools tagged by the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict as a recruitment haven for the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the New People’s Army.
