VICE President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte-Carpio has encouraged persons deprived of liberty in Metro Bacolod District Jail to enroll in the Alternative Learning System.

“Hinikayat ko rin sila na mag-enroll sa Alternative Learning System ng Department of Education para sa gustong mag-equivalency sa elementary at high school para meron silang pagkakataon na makatapos ng pag-aaral. Para sa kanilang paglabas, meron silang oportunidad na makapagtrabaho,” she said in a post after she visited PDLs.

ALS is a parallel learning system that provides a practical option to the existing formal instruction. When one does not have or cannot access formal education in schools, ALS is an alternate or substitute, according to DepEd.

The Education Secretary also urged them to tell their children the importance of education.

“Lagi kong pinapaalala na ang buhay ay puno ng pagsubok ngunit kung ikaw ay may pinag-aralan at nakatapos ng pagaaral, ikaw ay mas magkakaroon ng oportunidad na maging malakas sa maraming hamon ng buhay,” Duterte-Carpio added.

Since she was a mayor of Davao City, it is a habit to visit PDLs during the Christmas season, she said.
