SENATE TACKLES PROPOSAL TO CREATE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION

/ 8 July 2021

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian created a technical working group that will review the proposed creation of a Congressional Oversight Committee on Education that will review and assess the education system of the country.

During the hearing of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Culture and Arts, which Gatchalian chairs, Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan said a similar committee formed in 1990 but not all the recommendations of the first education committee were fully implemented.

He said the creation of a second education committee is necessary as the current education system lags behind as shown by the poor performance of Filipino students in international assessments.

Malaluan said that education needs to meet the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution.

If created, the oversight committee would carry out the national review, assessment and evaluation of the performance of the agencies regulating basic and higher education in the country as well as their manpower development.

The committee will be composed of 10 members — five each from the House of Representatives and from the Senate.
