LAWMAKER SEEKS EXTRA PAY FOR TEACHERS

/ 15 October 2021

ACT TEACHERS Partylist Rep.  France Castro sought additional funding for the Department of Education that will be used as compensation for teachers doing co-curricular and out of school activities.

Castro proposed an additional P500 million for other activities outside of what is defined normal duties of teachers.

She stressed that the funding shall be used exclusively to pay public school teachers who are required to render co-curricular, out of school and similar activities as defined by guidelines set by DepEd.

Castro added that teachers who attend such activities should be paid an additional compensation of not less than 25 percent of their basic salary.

Even non-teaching personnel who worked in excess of eight hours shall be paid an additional compensation of at least 25 percent of their basic salary.

Castro also pushed for an additional P1 billion fund for public school teachers in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao.

She said that the funding will ensure that they will get benefits under Magna Carta for Public School Teachers, as well as the World Teachers’ Day incentive that other teachers have received.
