DEPED TO PROVIDE PSYCH AID AFTER ATENEO DE ZAMBOANGA SHOOTING

19 August 2026

THE DEPARTMENT of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday assured psychological first aid to affected learners and school personnel following the tragic shooting incident at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

This came after two learners reportedly died during the incident at the Junior High School campus, involving a Grade 9 child in conflict with the law (CICL), at the private school in Barangay Lunzuran, Zamboanga City.

In a statement, the DepEd expressed its grave concern over the morning tragedy.

“We are also coordinating with mental health partners to provide Psychological First Aid and psychosocial support to those affected,” it said.

In addition, DepEd also assured other necessary assistance to the affected learners and families.

“DepEd stands with the Ateneo de Zamboanga community during this difficult time and is ready to extend whatever support and assistance we can to the affected learners, families, school personnel, and concerned authorities,” it added.

The agency, meanwhile, urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information, as well as sensitive photos, videos, and details of the incident.

Ateneo coordinates with parents

The university said it coordinated with parents and guardians to pick up their children, while assuring the safety of those still inside the campus.

It asked the public to respect the privacy of those affected by the incident.

“We pray for the quick resolution of the situation and for the safety of all. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding,” it said.

School officials said “the full report with full details to be provided as soon as possible.”

“We have set up official communication channels and will relay these information to the public as soon as possible,” the university said.

Classes are suspended until Wednesday. On Monday, in-person classes were also suspended due to high heat index. (PNA)
