THE DEPARTMENT of Education (DepEd) is working to relocate Manuel Luis Quezon High School–Manila following serious infrastructure and health concerns at its current site in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

According to DepEd, the school occupies the second floor of a wet market near the LRT-1 Blumentritt Station under a usufruct agreement with the Manila local government. The site has suffered significant infrastructure deterioration, posing concerns over the safety and well-being of students and teachers.

Deteriorating toilet facilities, leaking roofs, and persistent sanitation problems forced the school to temporarily shift to flexible learning arrangements.

“We hear the urgent call of our teachers and learners at Manuel Luis Quezon High School–Manila. Our learners cannot focus and our teachers cannot teach effectively when basic needs such as clean, functioning restrooms and quiet, safe spaces are compromised,” Education Secretary Sonny Angara said.

“Finding suitable land in dense urban areas is always a challenge, but it is one we are actively solving through proper coordination,” he added.

DepEd said it is coordinating closely with the Manila LGU to advance the school’s permanent relocation, complete the necessary documentation, and address site acquisition and demolition requirements.

The agency and the city government are also exploring leasing options to provide temporary facilities while the permanent school site is being developed.
