UST PROF RECEIVES COLUMBIA-NIKKEI SCHOLARSHIP GRANT
A PROFESSOR from the University of Santo Tomas received a scholarship grant from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Nikkei, Inc. of Japan.
Prinz Magtulis of the Department of Communication and Media Studies received $100,000 in financial assistance for his master’s in data journalism program.
“I am extremely privileged to have the opportunity to attend Columbia Journalism School thanks to the kind support of Nikkei,” Magtulis said.
“I have always been devoted to telling stories using data. A data journalism education from Columbia would equip me with vital skills to dig deeper on data sets, and to simplify their complexities in my stories in a more optimal way,” he added.
Magtulis served as a researcher for the Financial Times and worked as a reporter for The Philippine Star and Business World.
He was also a business news editor for Philstar.com.
In 2016, he won the Finance Reporter of the Year award by the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines.
Magtulis obtained his bachelor’s degree in journalism at UST in 2010. In 2015, he finished his master’s degree in public administration at the Catholic University of Korea.
