UNIVERSITY OF BAGUIO LAUDS PETECIO

/ 4 August 2021

THE UNIVERSITY of Baguio congratulated its alumna, Nesthy Petecio, for securing a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics.

Petecio settled for silver medal in the finals of the women’s featherweight division after bowing to hometown bet Sena Irie of Japan on Tuesday, August 3.

“Maraming salamat sa paglaban, Nesthy! Your University of Baguio family and the Filipino nation are very proud of you,” UB said in a Facebook post.

“We look forward to your next bouts and journey! We look forward to having you back home,” it added.

Petecio made history as the first Filipina to win an Olympic medal in boxing. This is also the country’s first podium finish in boxing since the 1996 Games in Atlanta, when Mansueto ‘Onyok’ Velasco won silver in light flyweight.

The university also lauded its two alumnus — Carlo Paalam and Eumir Marcial — for advancing to the semifinal round of men’s flyweight and middleweight division, respectively.

Paalam and Marcial are assured of at least a bronze medal and still have a chance to vie for the gold medal.
