FOUR alumni of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños made it to the top 10 in the Philippine Academy of Microbiology Certification Exam for Registered Microbiologists.

Gerard Aguilar placed second, while Edison Jay Pagoso came in third in the exam.

Alea Maurice Simbulan and Shiela Marie Virgo-Salinas were ranked seventh and eighth, respectively.

The exam for microbiologists serves as the certification arm of the Philippine Society of Microbiology, Inc.

PAM said 57 takers passed the exam held on January 21-23, 2023.

In 2019, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri filed Senate Bill 1058 or the Philippine Microbioogy Act to create a Board of Microbiology and administer licensure tests to institute microbiology professionals and a regulatory system to promote food safety, improve quality of goods and prevent spread of diseases.
