MANILA CITY LIBRARY EYES MORE ACCESSIBLE, MODERN LEARNING SPACES

/ 30 October 2026

THE MANILA City Library is expanding its vision of open, accessible, and modern learning spaces for all as it celebrates its 80th founding anniversary, with programs designed to bring educational resources closer to communities.

From January to September this year, the library served 54,571 users through its literacy programs, mobile learning services, and digital resources, despite four branches remaining closed for rehabilitation.

Manila Vice Mayor Chi Atienza and City Library Director Mylene Villanueva presented proposed programs and projects aimed at broadening the library’s reach and improving access to learning opportunities.

These include the digital literacy program, Edukampyon Literacy Van, Mobile Learning Center, and Trike Tuklas, initiatives designed to bring educational resources and learning activities directly to more communities.

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said the city library should serve as a welcoming space where residents and visitors can read, study, and expand their knowledge, regardless of their background.

He also committed to continuing the renovation and modernization of library facilities to encourage greater public use and improve access to library services.

The city government envisions public libraries as more than places to borrow books. Through modern facilities and community-based programs, they can serve as accessible learning hubs where people can strengthen their literacy skills, explore digital resources, and pursue lifelong learning.

As the Manila City Library enters its ninth decade, it aims to reach more learners by combining traditional library services with innovative programs that bring knowledge closer to the communities they serve.
