TWO individuals linked to the recent school shooting in South Cotabato have been arrested, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said during Senate deliberations on its proposed 2027 budget.

NBI Director Atty. Melvin Matibag said one of the suspects was directly linked to the South Cotabato shooting, while the other, an alleged online groomer, was arrested in Cebu for allegedly encouraging minors to commit acts of violence.

Matibag said both suspects are now undergoing legal proceedings in coordination with the Department of Justice’s National Prosecution Service.

He added that the arrest of the alleged online groomer could potentially prevent at least 10 children from being recruited into violent activities.

During the hearing, Matibag also appealed for additional confidential funds to strengthen the NBI’s capability to combat cybercrime and online threats targeting children.

Senator Kiko Pangilinan, meanwhile, called for a thorough investigation into the series of school shootings reported in recent months.

Pangilinan expressed concern that the incidents could be organized, saying the pattern of attacks was unusual and would be even more alarming if foreign individuals were found to be involved.

Responding to Pangilinan’s remarks, Matibag said the senator’s concerns had a factual basis and assured lawmakers that the NBI was continuing its investigation into each case.
