SENATOR SEEKS P10,000 INTERNSHIP ALLOWANCE FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS

/ 15 July 2026

SENATOR Raffy Tulfo has filed a measure seeking to institutionalize a one-time P10,000 internship allowance for students in public and private colleges and universities who are required to undergo internship or practicum programs as part of their academic requirements.

Under Senate Bill No. 2157, or the proposed “An Act Institutionalizing the Grant of Internship Allowance for Students in Public and Private State Universities and Colleges in the Philippines,” Tulfo said the measure aims to ease the financial burden faced by students during their on-the-job training.

In the bill’s explanatory note, Tulfo stressed that while labor laws uphold the principle of “no work, no pay,” students undergoing mandatory internships also dedicate significant time, effort, and service yet often receive no compensation.

The senator said internship and practicum programs play a vital role in preparing students for their future careers by providing hands-on experience beyond the classroom.

However, he pointed out that many students still have to shoulder expenses for transportation, meals, documentation, and other requirements while completing their training.

Tulfo noted that the financial burden is especially evident among students taking medical and health-related courses, who are often assigned to hospitals and clinical settings where they work long hours under demanding schedules while balancing academic responsibilities.

Under the proposed measure, qualified students who have completed their required internship or practicum will receive a one-time financial assistance of P10,000.

The grant aims to help cover internship-related expenses and provide support to students and their families, particularly those facing financial difficulties.

Tulfo expressed hope for the immediate passage of the bill, saying the measure would recognize the sacrifices of student interns and provide meaningful assistance as they complete a crucial requirement for graduation.
