GOV’T URGED TO PRIORITIZE SAFETY OF LEARNERS, TEACHERS AFTER CEBU QUAKE
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian underscored the urgent need to ensure the safety of learners and teachers in the aftermath of the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Northern Cebu, leaving casualties and widespread damage.
“The 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Cebu is a stark reminder that children are the most vulnerable in times of disaster. Their safety, well-being, and continued learning must be our highest priority,” Gatchalian said.
The senator called on the Department of Education and local government units to act quickly by conducting thorough inspections of school buildings, suspending the use of unsafe facilities, and providing psychosocial support to affected learners and teachers.
He stressed that protecting young learners must remain central to all disaster response and recovery efforts, noting that education continuity should go hand-in-hand with safety measures.
“I join in prayer for the safety and speedy recovery of our fellow Filipinos in Cebu,” he added.
Gatchalian has consistently pushed for stronger disaster preparedness in schools, highlighting the need for resilient infrastructure and comprehensive response programs to safeguard the education sector in times of calamity.
