YOUNG FILIPINA GYMNAST SHINES WITH 3 MEDALS IN ITALY TOURNAMENT

24 September 2025

FILIPINA rhythmic gymnast Maria Sofia Castillo Rivera once again showcased her growing talent after clinching two gold medals and a silver at the 3rd Rhythmic Gymnastics Trial Regional Competition held in Turin, Italy, on September 21.

The 11-year-old athlete, who is based in Turin, captured the top spot in both the all-around and free hand categories, while securing second place in the hoop routine. Rivera has been steadily making a name for herself, adding these latest wins to the five medals she earned from various tournaments in 2024.

Her mother, Venus, credited Sofia’s success to her discipline, determination, and the constant support of her family. “The hardest challenge is her schedule,” Venus shared. “She trains four days a week for four hours after school, sometimes finishing late at night, then waking up early for weekend sessions. On Sundays, she often has competitions. But Sofia truly loves gymnastics, and we’re here to support her all the way.”

Although born and raised in Turin, Sofia’s first steps into gymnastics began in Lipa, Batangas, when she was five years old through a grassroots program. By the age of eight, she was already competing and is now honing her skills under Eurogymnica Torino, one of Italy’s well-regarded gymnastics clubs.

Her mother said every victory is more than just a medal. “It’s a reward for her hard work and sacrifices, and it makes us very proud,” she added.

Rivera has already opened 2025 with notable triumphs, bagging gold in the all-around event at the 1st Trial Individual Championships last March, followed by another gold at the Trial Regional Championships in May.

With her passion and perseverance, Sofia is emerging as one of Italy’s promising young gymnasts—carrying with her the pride of both her Filipino heritage and Italian upbringing.
