SENATOR REITERATES URGENT NEED FOR CLIMATE-RESILIENT SCHOOL BUILDINGS

/ 7 February 2025

SENATOR Win Gatchalian has emphasized the urgent need to construct climate-resilient school buildings as the Philippines faces frequent natural disasters.

As one of the most disaster-prone countries, Gatchalian stressed that ensuring safe and sturdy learning spaces is essential, not optional.

The shortage of classrooms has long been a problem, further worsened by frequent calamities. In 2024 alone, 1,855 schools were affected by disasters, requiring P6.6 billion for repairs and P5.3 billion for replacing 1,846 classrooms.

Despite an increase in the Quick Response Fund to P3 billion, Gatchalian pointed out that this remains insufficient to address the widespread damage caused by natural calamities.

To tackle this, Gatchalian welcomed the partnership between DepEd and the Public-Private Partnership Center, calling it a step in the right direction.

He suggested exploring multiple solutions, including a counterpart program in which local governments and the national government share responsibility for classroom construction, ensuring more efficient project implementation.

Gatchalian also advocated for the adoption of innovative construction methods and materials that can withstand extreme weather conditions, ensuring school infrastructure is sustainable and adaptable to climate change.

“Our learners deserve safe, secure, and sustainable learning spaces,” Gatchalian said. “Investing in climate-resilient schools protects students and ensures uninterrupted education amid disasters.”
