/ 14 November 2024

AN ALUMNA of Silliman University was recently honored by the New York State Assembly for her outstanding contributions to the nursing profession.

Nella Fe Pineda-Marcon was recognized for over 30 years of dedication to the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), where she served on its Board of Directors and as Secretary from 2015 to 2024.

She chaired the Climate Justice Committee, advocating for safe staffing, environmental justice, and healthcare access.

“A committed volunteer, she responded as a first responder during Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and has since led numerous disaster relief and medical missions worldwide to strengthen global health responses and address common challenges faced by nurses,” Silliman University said.

“Additionally, as a member of her bargaining unit’s executive committee and a delegate at Mount Sinai Morningside, she has been a steadfast advocate for the dignity and respect of nursing professionals, working to secure strong contracts and fostering leadership among nurses to advance justice and the common good,” the statement added.

The citation, recognizing her exceptional service to the community and New York State, was signed by Steven B. Raga, a member of the New York State Assembly.

Pineda-Marcon completed her high school education in 1977 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Silliman University in 1981. She later obtained her medical degree from Perpetual Help College of Medicine in 1987.

She was named an Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee by Silliman University in 2021 for her work in disaster relief and climate justice advocacy.
