VERZOSA DAZZLES AS JRU BLASTS PERPETUAL TO END THREE-GAME SKID
Dolly Verzosa showed the way as Jose Rizal University (JRU) outlasted the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD), 25-19, 25-20, 20-25, 25-18, Wednesday in NCAA women’s volleyball at the Paco Arena in Manila.
Team captain Dolly Verzosa led from the front as she posted a triple-double effort of 17 points to go along with 23 digs and 13 excellent receptions.
Reinforcements also came from Riza Rose added 12 markers while Melgar and Mary May Ruiz nailed 10 points apiece as JRU snapped its three-game losing slump to improve to an even 3-3 win-loss card.
The Lady Bombers started off strong as it dealt an early 20-15 spread, but Perpetual tried to turn things around closing the gap to three, 18-21, before Verzosa ignited a 4-1 run to take the opening set.
The momentum carried on for JRU in the second set but lost its steam in the third set as it slumped to an 11-point deficit in the third, 10-21.
Verzosa tried to rally her teammates by leading the offense to trim the deficit within just three, 20-23, but an error from Verzosa and a Rizel Aldea block ultimately won the set for the Lady Altas.
Come the fourth set, it was a nip and tuck for both of the teams before JRU started to pull away after an 8-2 barrage, 24-18, before the wall of Renesa Melgar and Rose blocked Mary Rhose Dapol to seal the win.
Dapol finished with 10 points and 13 digs while Daisy Salimbacod sparked off the bench with nine markers as Perpetual dropped to a 2-4 record.
JRU next faces a tough challenge as it battles league leader College of Saint Benilde on Sunday while Perpetual tackles defending champion Arellano University on Saturday.
