P250K REWARD AWAITS FOR EJ OBIENA AFTER SETTING NEW NATIONAL RECORD
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will grant Ej Obiena worth P250,000 as an incentive for setting a new national record in the Wanda Diamond League leg in France last week.
The 25-year-old PH Olympian shattered his own record after clinching 5.91m which elapsed his 5.87m record registered in Poland last June.
Obiena placed 11th at Tokyo Olympics and failed to take the Paris meet to which Duplantis hailed championed by clearing 6.01 meters.
Nonetheless, Obiena’s incessant effort enabled him to clinch the silver medal and set a new PH record in the Wanda Diamond League.
This feat enabled Obiena to receive the cash incentive approved by PSC in a board meeting last Tuesday in accordance with section 8 of the RA Act 10699 or the expanded National Athletes, Coaches, and Trainers Benefits and Incentives Act of 2001.
This entails that “national athletes and other athletes who surpass Philippine record or ranking in any measurable international sports competition shall be given cash incentives, the amount of which may be determined by the PSC.”
However, Obiena will only receive the incentive once the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) officially certifies his accomplishment as a national mark.
Meanwhile, other PH athletes who are eligible for the incentive are lifter Elreen Ando, swimmer Luke Gebbie, and gymnast Caloy Yulo.
